Quang Ngai is located about 180km north of Qui Nhon and 350km from Nha Trang. Just north of Quang Ngai, in the district of Son My, is the site of the infamous My Lai massacre when American soldiers killed hundreds of civilians. There is a memorial on the site of the killings. A little way to the east of the My Lai Memorial is a long stretch of white sand beach called Bien Khe Ky. It is usually quiet with few visitors. 27km south of Quang Ngai is the pretty seaside town of Sa Huynh.
My Lai
There are no attractions whatsoever inside the city but Quang Ngai is the nearest major town to the site of the My Lai Massacre. The hamlet of My Lai was part of the village of Son My, and the memorial gardens and remains of the hamlet can be found in Son My village. The memorial gardens comprise some of the mass graves of the villagers, markers showing where the houses would have stood, and a recently added small museum which houses newspaper articles documenting the event from around the world, photos and statements from both the Vietnamese and the Americans. Also in the memorial gardens are some reconstructions of how a small number of the houses might have looked after the massacre, before the site was bombed in an attempt to eradicate evidence.
